SPEAK UP is rooted in the power of storytelling and real-world narratives. This online sexual assault prevention education program incorporates powerful stories told by survivors of sexual assault, rape, and stalking. The videos, content, and activities presented in SPEAK UP cultivate an atmosphere of individual engagement that promotes student learning.

General Learning Approach

Participants will complete seven individual learning modules and hear personal stories as they relate to the heavy-hitting issues of sexual assault on today’s college campuses. These lessons use real people to first engage, and then inform audiences. Following each video, participants will complete a quiz related to the video content. Participants will also complete pre- and post-assessments that gauge their understanding of all Campus SaVE Act subject areas.

The SPEAK UP approach utilizes emotion and stories to motivate. It is proven that stories built on empathy are a more powerful motivator than fear or anger (Shen, 2010). Additionally, the use of videos builds on research that demonstrates that voice-over lectures, roleplaying activities, or simulations do not have as meaningful an impact on online learning (Kaltura, 2014). The use of personal videos mixed with measured assessments helps to educate on and reinforce the content in manners that have demonstrated success in numerous avenues of education.

As a result of participating in SPEAK UP, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the various factors involved in rape, acquaintance rape, sexual assault, stalking, domestic violence and dating violence
  • Explain and implement primary prevention techniques specific to each of these topic areas
  • Define three bystander intervention techniques and articulate how to implement these techniques in social, private, and interpersonal situations
  • Define consent, the actions necessary for affirmative consent and the role of alcohol, drugs, consciousness, and power can play when obtaining consent
  • Articulate the steps involved in helping support a survivor of sexual assault
  • Feel empowered to utilize local area and campus resources
